At the close of 2022, the Climate Change Institute participated in the fifth meeting of the Climate Change Adaptation and Vulnerability Roundtable of the Guatemalan Climate Change Science System (SGCCC). Several representatives from different institutions attended the meeting.
La licenciada en Biología Rocío Silva, de Impulsouth Global Cooperation for Climate Action, participó con la ponencia “Gestión participativa y resiliente de los residuos plásticos en el área protegida marino costero Hawaii-AUMH”.
Presentation: “Participatory and resilient management of plastic waste in the Hawaii-AUMH coastal marine protected area.”
Rocío Silva is working in the Hawaii protected area with six ladino communities to find solutions that address the lack of an adequate waste management treatment.
Rocio explained that Hawaii lacks a private or municipal solid waste collection service and an authorized waste disposal site. As a result, residents have resorted to burning garbage, which causes
respiratory ailments in the general population and emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. There is also a high presence of garbage on the beaches, which negatively affects tourism and the population’s economy.

Alba Guerrero, representative of OWSD and Deputy Coordinator of the Climate Change Adaptation and Vulnerability Roundtable, shared information on ongoing and completed projects of the organization. Ana María Palomo of CEMAT commented that they will identify projects that have been developed by the institutions they represent to share them at the January 2023 meeting. Gustavo Madrid from SEGEPLAN emphasized that they do not generate research projects, however, they collaborate in the financing of projects and generate data that can be added to the matrix of research lines.
To talk about climate change is to think about adaptation and vulnerability, which is why at the ICC we continue to share knowledge at the SGCCC Guatemalan System of Climate Change Sciences.
