Forest nursery course concludes

April 19, 2023

The course started on the 16th of March and ended successfully today with a practical session at the CENGICAÑA tree nursery in Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Escuintla. The course was directed at technicians, NGO staff and students of related careers and had the objective of strengthening the capacities of the participants in plant production (nurseries), climate change mitigation and other environmental issues that can benefit Guatemalan society.

During the sessions, participants learned about the basics of ecosystems and tree species, forestry legislation in Guatemala, the steps for the creation and implementation of a forest nursery, as well as lessons and experiences of its management and installation. In addition, there was a practical session called “hands on”, which complemented the knowledge in different phases of a nursery such as: germination, preparation of substrate, filling of bags, among others.

Explanation of the seed germination process (germination beds).

This type of capacity building in forest nurseries will allow a better implementation of actions that contribute to climate change mitigation and the restoration and conservation of forests and ecosystems in the country. ICC will continue to implement capacity building actions with the support of institutions such as the National Forestry Institute (INAB), who provided the training in forestry legislation and other topics addressed in this course.
