On May 23, the launch of the “Sembrando Huella 2023” (Sowing footprint) campaign has held at the riverbank of the Madre Vieja River, which is now a nice young forest, located in Patulul, Suchitepéquez, and reforested some years ago under this and other local initiatives. The activity was promoted by the National Forest Institute (INAB), ICC and Rainforest Alliance.
The main results of the 2022 reforestation actions of the South Coast Restoration Network were presented. The Network is a group of government institutions, private companies, NGO, municipalities, and communities led by INAB and the ICC, aiming to strengthen restoration actions on the south coast through the promotion of strategies and strengthen the capacities of different stakeholders to potentiate the opportunities to restore the forest landscape.
The launch of this program is carried out every year to promote a forest culture in society, through awareness-raising activities, educational talks, children’s forest fairs and reforestation campaigns. Rony Granados, general manager of INAB commented that “this is a volunteer program in which many institutions, companies, people, etc. participate and support the recovery of forests”. He added that “last year more than 60 reforestation activities were carried out in the south coast and for this year it is expected that there will be more than 100; the national goal is to plant 4.5 million trees”.
To end the activity, the representatives of different companies, government institutions, NGOs, and communities, planted 250 saplings symbolizing the start of the reforestation days on the south coast for 2023.
