The Capacity building program of ICC carried out the “Communitarian climate Change adaptation” and “Climate Change actualization” diploma courses. These activities held with communitarian leaders from San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Sacatepéquez and agricultural technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) of Quetzaltenango department.
The first capacity building process focuses on benefiting community leaders of San Antonio Aguas Calientes, strengthening their knowledge of climate change, adaptation skills and watersheds, while the second diploma course, seeks to strengthen the capacities of agricultural technicians of MAGA Quetzaltenango through updates on climate change and its impacts in Guatemala.
“This process is of great help, since the effects of climate change affect everyone. It is essential to understand them and seek adaptation measures at the community level,” Sandra Patricia, community leader.
“The course contributes to the development of agricultural systems that are more resilient to climate change, ensuring food security and the well-being of communities”, Erika Soc, MAGA technician.
The thematic content at the community level is distributed in 7 sessions, addressing topics such as: environmental issues, conceptual bases on watersheds, the scientific basis of climate change, adaptation, climate change mitigation, disaster risk management and a field tour. The thematic content for technicians is distributed in 4 sessions: climate change and its impacts in Guatemala, climate scenarios, planning in community adaptation to climate change and adaptation options.
