The “2024 Reforestation Plan” of the Restoration Network of the Southern Coast of Guatemala, was held at Finca San Patricio in La Democracia, Escuintla department. This plan considers planting 750,000 trees in Escuintla, Santa Rosa, Jutiapa, Suchitepéquez, Retalhuleu, San Marcos, and Quetzaltenango departments. The main objective is to preserve the environment and to promote biodiversity conservation in this region.

The Restoration Network is an alliance made up of government institutions, non-governmental organizations, private companies, local governments, communities, and academic institutions. It is led by the Private Institute for Climate Change Research (ICC) and the National Forestry Institute (INAB). Since 2011, 2,973 reforestation projects have been implemented, achieving the recovery of 2,816 hectares of mangroves, riparian forests, dry and broadleaf forests, as well as the implementation of agroforestry and silvopastoral systems.

Dr. Alex Guerra, Director General of the ICC, emphasized that the focus is mainly on water recharge areas, riverbanks, and mangrove areas, recognized for their biological and ecological importance. Restoring these areas protects water sources, promotes connectivity between forests and contributes to carbon sequestration, increasing the resilience of the territory.

In addition to the work with the Restoration Network, the ICC with the support of its members and international cooperation through the Altiplano Resiliente project and the Luis Von Ahn Foundation, plans to plant another 750,000 trees in the upper parts of the watersheds in the departments of Sololá, Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala, Santa Rosa and Jalapa.
