November 20 , 2024

On November 15th, the monthly meeting of the Climate Science Board of the Guatemalan Climate Change Science System (SGCCC) was held at the headquarters of the Private Institute for Climate Change Research (ICC) in Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Escuintla. The main objective of the meeting was to develop the work plan for 2025 and learn more about the ICC’s meteorological and hydrometric stations.

Representatives from the National Coffee Association (ANACAFE), the Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) and the University of San Carlos of Guatemala (USAC) participated in the meeting. This meeting strengthened inter-institutional collaboration, to improve climate monitoring in the country. Additionally, the CENGICAÑA meteorological station in Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa and the Acarigua hydrometric station in Cocales, Patulul, Suchitepéquez were visited.

It was highlighted that the ICC meteorological stations record data on seven variables every 15 minutes, with a weekly quality control process and monthly preventive maintenance. Also, the Acarigua hydrometric station calculates flow estimation by providing crucial information on river water levels. This data has been fundamental in managing the rational use of water, ensuring water reaches the mouth of Madre Vieja River basin.
