On October 30th a field tour at the southern coast of Guatemala was held and organized by the ICC to promote an exchange of experiences related to the sustainable water and soil management in the sugarcane agroindustry with representatives of the operational sustainability committee of the CASSA group from El Salvador.

During the tour they learned about the design of soil conservation structures and rainwater harvesting systems in some cultivation areas of Ingenio Pantaleon. These structures were developed to ensure the sustainability of operations and cultural practices of sugarcane cultivation, prevent soil loss caused by water erosion and increase water retention and recharge.

“We consulted the ICC the methodology to further understand how we are contributing to water infiltration in the field from the sugarcane plantations and to learn more about the measures being taken in the mills of the region”

The committee also visited the meteorological station at CENGICAÑA, that provides a scientific basis for conservation and sustainability strategies trough the generation of different variables related to water monitoring and management.

These activities promote development in the agroindustry through the exchange of knowledge and experiences. They also strengthen guild strategies focused on soil and water conservation to face the challenges of climate change and ensure the efficient use of water resources in both Central American countries.
