Innovative tool to optimize carbon footprint studies

December 17 , 2024

Fourteen years ago, the ICC made a significant step forward by conducting the first carbon footprint for the sugarcane industry. Since then, commitment to sustainability has grown and it is estimated to be more than 100 carbon footprints annually in different industries including sugarcane, banana, plantain, avocado and power generation. This ongoing effort reflects the companies’ dedication to reducing and measuring their environmental impact.

To carry out a GHG emissions inventory, the calculator is based on the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National GHG Inventories and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. In turn, the sources of emissions are complemented with those required by some certifications such as BONSUCRO in the case of sugarcane.

The launch officially took place in November 2024, with the participation of ICC member companies from Guatemala and El Salvador, who were enthusiastic about the possibilities the tool offers. This event marks a milestone in environmental management in the region, underscoring the importance of collaboration and innovation in the fight against climate change.

The launch was carried out through 3 events in which ICC members from Guatemala and El Salvador participated.
