May 14 , 2025

On May 14, the oath-taking ceremony for the Community Civil Protection Commissions (CCPC) of the communities of Nuevo México, Palo Combo, and Vista Hermosa in Sonsonate Centro was held. The event took place on the grounds of the Catholic Church in the Nuevo México hamlet and included the participation of local authorities, representatives from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), and civil society members, with the objective of strengthening community capacities to respond to climate emergencies.

The agenda featured speeches from key stakeholders, including the mayor of Sonsonate Centro, who highlighted the importance of institutional coordination for civil protection. The departmental head of the General Direction of Civil Protection emphasized the role of communities in risk management. Additionally, during the event, Pilar Montero Gullón, AECID’s representative, delivered supplies and equipment to the CCPC members.

The CCPCs are community-established entities recognized by the General Law on Civil Protection, Disaster Prevention, and Mitigation, as well as by the National Civil Protection System. They form part of processes and actions aimed at common benefit, with the purpose of preparing to face adverse effects caused by the occurrence of hazardous events.

The Climate Change Institute (ICC) was responsible for forming and training these commissions within the framework of the project “Contributing to Socio-Ecological Resilient Landscapes Against Climate Change for Prosperity and Family Nutrition in Guatemala and El Salvador,” supported financially by AECID, with counterpart contributions from ICC and the CASSA group.
