Plantarán 600 mil arbolitos
en la costa sur de Guatemala

June 05 , 2025

On June 5, at the San Bonifacio farm in Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, the launch of GUATECAÑA’s 2025 Reforestation Plan took place. GUATECAÑA is an initiative of Guatemala’s sugarcane producers’ guild, aiming to plant 600,000 trees this year. The event included participation from sugar industry collaborators, government representatives, and media, who highlighted the ecological importance of reforestation.

During the activity, a symbolic planting of 1,000 native tree species was conducted, including Volador (Terminalia oblonga), Puntero (Sickingia salvadorensis Standl.), Aripin (Caesalpinia velutina), Conacaste (Enterolobium cyclocarpum), Plumillo (Schizolobium parahyba), Cedar (Cedrela odorata), Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), Willow (Salix alba), Rosul (Dalbergia stevensonii), and Matilisguate (Tabebuia rosea), in a riparian zone of a tributary river within the Coyolate watershed. This effort seeks not only to increase forest cover but also to contribute to the restoration of key ecosystems through forest rehabilitation techniques that combine species with varying growth rates and light requirements to optimize the development of a balanced forest.

This year, the Private Institute for Climate Change Research (ICC) manages 44 nurseries producing 1.2 million trees, of which 600,000 are contributions from sugarcane companies. The reforestation initiatives represent private sector investment and include collaboration with communities, municipalities, companies, and active support from the National Forestry Institute (INAB).

The rehabilitation technique used focuses on restoring ecological processes, productivity, and ecosystem services in the area. It is based on forest landscape restoration strategies for Mesoamerica developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This methodology ensures efficient and sustainable recovery of natural areas.
