ICC receives a visit from the Central American Network on Climate Change Science (RC4)

October 31 , 2025

On October 30, the Climate Change Institute (ICC) welcomed members of the Central American Climate Change Science Network (RC4) to its facilities. The aim was to introduce the various researchers who form part of this network to the work carried out by the ICC on the southern coast of Guatemala and thus evaluate the possibility of incorporating the Institute into the network. The RC4 seeks to increase the region’s visibility in the academic sphere and promote scientific dissemination, especially among vulnerable groups.

During the tour, the researchers visited the ICC’s first weather station in CENGICAÑA, where they saw firsthand the technology used to monitor climate variables. They also traveled to the Madre Vieja riverbank forest, located on the Acarigua farm, a 10 km area that has been recovered through reforestation processes. In this space, visitors were able to observe the progress made in ecological restoration and sustainable water management.

One of the highlights of the day was the explanation of the origin and evolution of the technical river committees, a mechanism for dialogue that arose from conflicts over water in the region. ICC experts shared how users have organized themselves to ensure that the river reaches its mouth, especially during the dry season, highlighting the key role of the southern coast river monitoring system operated by the ICC. They also learned about the operation of a hydrometric station and its importance in monitoring flow.

The visit reinforced the potential for collaboration between the ICC and RC4, both in the production of joint scientific publications and in the transfer of knowledge to various sectors of society. With its extensive experience in research and outreach, the ICC is positioned as a strategic ally in strengthening Central America’s presence in global debates on climate change.
