Regional project promotes food security and sustainability to face climate change in Guatemala and El Salvador

November 27 , 2025

On November 26, the closing event and presentation of results for the project “Contributing to socio-ecological landscapes resilient to climate change for family prosperity and nutrition in Guatemala and El Salvador” was held in Panajachel, Sololá. The project was implemented by the ICC with financial support from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). The initiative, developed between 2023 and 2025, aimed to strengthen the adaptive capacity of rural communities to the impacts of climate change by promoting sustainable practices for food security and ecosystem resilience.

During the event, the main results achieved in both countries were presented, where concrete actions were implemented to reduce climate vulnerability. Among the achievements are the adaptation of agri-food systems, the protection of ecosystems, and the generation of technical and scientific knowledge. The project worked in priority areas of Guatemala and El Salvador, directly benefiting more than 583 families and strengthening capacities in local institutions and community actors.

The project was structured around four components: (1) implementation of adaptation measures in agri-food systems, (2) protection of ecosystems, (3) capacity building in communities, and (4) generation and systematization of knowledge. These actions were complemented by studies on climate vulnerability, the production of maps and technical documents, as well as the promotion of ancestral practices and coordination with local authorities to ensure sustainability.

Among some significant results, 313 family production systems were strengthened in Guatemala, while 51 resilient agri-food systems were implemented in El Salvador. In addition, 128 workshops were held with community organizations, 10 technical documents were produced, and more than 1,700 climate data points were generated for analysis. All of this contributes to improving food security and family nutrition, reducing risks from phenomena such as droughts and climate variability, which have shown worrying trends in Sololá in recent years.

The project’s conclusion includes interventions by local authorities and the ICC, as well as the presentation of key findings and delivery of technical materials. This effort reaffirms the commitment to promoting more resilient and sustainable territories, where adaptation to climate change is an opportunity for prosperity and well-being for rural families in Guatemala and El Salvador.
