On December 5, World Soil Day 2025 was celebrated at the National Coffee Association (ANACAFÉ) building in Guatemala City, under the slogan “Healthy soils for healthy cities.” This event brought together key players from the environmental, agricultural, and academic sectors, reaffirming the importance of soil as the basis for food security and climate resilience in the country.
The activity was organized by the Guatemalan Alliance for Soil Management and was attended by authorities from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food (MAGA), as well as representatives from other organizations, students, the president of ANACAFÉ, and the FAO representative in Guatemala. This space allowed the strengthening of alliances and the sharing of progress in sustainable soil management.

During the conference, relevant topics were presented, such as soil health, microbiological and nutritional quality indicators in Guatemala, progress in soil surveying under the FAO’s SoilFER project, and the proposed Soil Conservation Law Initiative, which has already been presented and forwarded to the agriculture committee of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala. The ministers highlighted the urgency of protecting this vital resource to ensure healthier and more resilient cities.
As part of the experiences shared, Jazmín Torres, representing the ICC, presented the efforts made on the Pacific coast of Guatemala for soil conservation and health. These actions reflect the ICC’s commitment to sustainability and adaptation to climate change, contributing to the protection of ecosystems and food security.

The Guatemalan Alliance for Soil Management, of which the ICC is a member, is a technical and multisectoral space created in 2020, bringing together 23 public, private, academic, and international cooperation institutions. Since its foundation, the Alliance has promoted technical dialogue, the formulation of public policy guidelines, and the proposal of a legislative initiative for the conservation and restoration of agricultural soils, recognizing that soil health is essential for sustainable development.
