Professionals from the Private Institute for Climate Change Research, ICC, presented the results of the project “Community resilience assessment to flood and drought events in the Coyolate basin”, to the local media the morning of the last Tuesday, March 8th.
Resilience can be understood as the ability of the systems (houses, communities and crops) to recover against the effects or impacts of a threat, in this specific investigation, floods or droughts.
This investigation was performed by the following interdisciplinary and international professionals: Ph.D. Elcy Corrales Roa from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogota, Colombia; Ph.D. Ezequiel Araoz from the Universidad Nacional de Tucuman, Argentina; doctoral candidate Luis Blacutt from the Universidad Mayor de San Andres, Bolivia and M.A. Pablo Yax Lopez from the ICC.
The assessment focused on studying how communities have been affected by floods and droughts throughout the last decades. Also, an analysis was made to see if they have recovered from those events. The evolution of the Coyolate’s main riverbed was also analyzed from 1969 to date.
The presentation was in charge of Pablo Yax, coordinator of the Capacity Building and Communications program, Elcy Corrales, from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogota, and Robin de Leon, Communications Officer of the ICC.
The assessment started in 2014 and it is funded by the Inter American Institute for Global Change Research, IAI, and finishes by March 14th, 2016.
