ICC and Municipality of Antigua Guatemala sign Letter of Understanding to promote environmental and
risk management actions

November 26 , 2025

The ICC and the Municipality of Antigua Guatemala signed a letter of understanding establishing a framework for cooperation to develop joint initiatives in conservation, forest restoration, risk management, forest fire prevention, soil conservation, establishment of forest nurseries, and other local and regional environmental strategies. This agreement seeks to strengthen the technical and operational capacities of both institutions to address the challenges of climate change and promote sustainable development in the municipality.

Among the actions contemplated is the participatory development of an “Integrated Water Resources Management Plan for the Pensativo River Micro-Watershed,” which will provide access to funds for its sustainable management. In addition, work will be done to define measures derived from the risk management plans of the Heritage City and the municipality, as well as to implement forest restoration projects and agroforestry systems in priority areas.

The letter also establishes specific commitments: the ICC will provide technical advice and support on issues such as soil conservation, forest fire prevention, and climate change, while the Municipality commits to institutionalizing processes and contributing human and financial resources as available. Both parties will promote technical training and the exchange of successful experiences to strengthen the resilience of the territory.

As part of this effort, and thanks to funding from the Luis Von Ahn Foundation, a forest nursery will be set up in Antigua Guatemala with the goal of producing more than 18,000 native plants by 2026 for restoration activities. The ICC will provide technical support and inputs to ensure the quality of the species, thus contributing to the recovery of forest cover and the protection of natural resources.
