On November 12, the International Green Alliances Congress was held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Under the slogan “Action, Inspiration, and Change,” the event commemorated the tenth anniversary of PlantatónHN, Honduras’ largest reforestation and environmental education campaign, which has planted more than 54 million trees.
Issues such as the climate crisis, green job creation, and nature-based solutions were addressed at the congress, which served as a forum for strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors with the aim of ensuring ecosystem resilience and water security in the region. More than 800 people, including leaders, experts, and organizations committed to sustainability to promote solutions to the challenges of climate change, gathered at this important event.

At the event, ICC Director General Alex Guerra participated as one of the international speakers invited by the Francisco Morazán National Pedagogical University, one of the organizing institutions. During his presentation entitled “Local and Global Benefits of Reforestation,” Dr. Guerra shared his vision on the contribution of the PlantatónHN initiative to combating climate change, highlighting the local benefits of restoring forests.
Forests are important for soil protection by maintaining fertility, regulating the water cycle, and conserving biodiversity. “The forest has a sponge effect, which helps retain water and prevent it from going directly into rivers. This not only helps reduce the risk of flooding, but also recharges the groundwater, which is vital for springs, water sources, and river water levels during the dry season,” said Dr. Guerra, adding that planting trees in cities is important for cooling and cleaning the air, which makes for a more pleasant environment.
In addition to his presentation, Dr. Guerra was invited to several interviews on Honduran digital and television media by Televicentro, one of the largest media companies in the Central American country. With this, the ICC reaffirms its commitment to sustainable land management and the promotion of actions that have a positive impact on the Mesoamerican region and the planet. Reforestation is a powerful tool for addressing the challenges of climate change.
