On May 22nd, to commemorate “Tree Day” a reforestation program was launched at the Vendejo farm in the department of Retalhuleu, Guatemala. The event was organized by the members of the “Ocosito River technical board”. During the event 300 trees of native species were planted.

Participants in the activity included: The Governor of Retalhuleu department, and representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), ICC, the National Forest Institute (INAB), the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP), sugar, banana, palm oil and cattle producers, and Rainforest Alliance.

The technical board was established in 2016 to generate dialogue mechanisms for the responsible and rational use of water and the conservation of the watershed. The reforestation program began with the commitment of the board to reforest and support the integral management of the watershed, with a goal of planting 100,000 trees of native species in 2021.

ICC produced more than one million trees for the 2021 reforestation season.
