New INAB authorities reaffirm their commitment to forest restoration on the pacific slope

On February 25th, the first meeting of 2025 of the Southern Coast Restoration Network of Guatemala was held at the facilities of Ingenio Magdalena, located in the municipality of La Democracia, Escuintla. The event was attended by the new Manager and Deputy Manager of the National Forest Institute (INAB). During the meeting, the importance of collaboration among the various actors involved in the restoration of forest cover in the region was highlighted.

One of the main objectives of the meeting was to present to the new INAB authorities, the work that the network has been developing, emphasizing the fundamental role of each participant in this joint effort. Topics such as the restoration of gallery forests, mangrove restoration, and the results obtained to date were discussed, as well as the need to continue working in a coordinated manner to achieve more ambitious landscape restoration goals.

The event included a panel discussion where the vision of various sectors, including the private sector, academia, local communities, international cooperation, and INAB, was presented. Panelists included representatives from entities such as Rainforest Alliance, ICC, INAB, CUNSUROC, ASOBORDAS, and Grupo HAME, who discussed forest restoration opportunities on the Pacific slope. This space allowed for enriching dialogue on how to integrate efforts to address future challenges.

As a result of the meeting, INAB authorities expressed their support and openness to promote future projects related to seed sources and integrative projects that link forests, water, soil, and communities. This commitment represents an important step towards consolidating a comprehensive restoration strategy on the southern coast of Guatemala, aiming for sustainable development and the conservation of natural resources.
