New Weather Station Inaugurated in Chimaltenango to Improve Climate Forecasting and Community Resilience

August 23 , 2024

On August 22, the automatic weather station “San Rafael-Patzún” was inaugurated at the San Rafael estate property of the company Palo Blanco, member of the ICC. The estate is in the village El Sitio, Patzún, Chimaltenango. It began operations in April of this year and will allow for a greater density of meteorological data in the area.

The installation is part of the “Altiplano Resiliente” project, which has the goal of reducing vulnerability through ecosystem-based adaptation measures in the Xayá-Coyolate micro-watershed. The project is funded by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Green Climate Fund.

The new station will collect a greater amount of meteorological data, improving the accuracy of forecasts in the region. Additionally, it will promote the exchange of experiences between technical and traditional knowledge, linking meteorological information with the use of bioindicators observed by local communities.

Dr. Ottoniel Monterroso from UICN and coordinator of the Altiplano Resiliente project, emphasized the importance of having these tools to build more resilient communities and highlighted the relevance of partnerships between the private sector, local producers, grassroots organizations, and the international community to achieve common development and adaptation goals.

“The more stations like these we have, the more accurate our forecasts will be, providing the information we need and enabling us to project what we need to adapt to”.

This station is integrated into the network of 48 automatic weather stations operated by the ICC in Guatemala and will be part of the Integration Protocol for Meteorological Stations of the National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology-INSIVUMEH, thus improving meteorological databases for both the Guatemalan highlands and the rest of the country.

In addition to climate actions, the “Altiplano Resiliente” project includes risk management and forest restoration initiatives, such as establishing agroforestry systems, forest plantations, restoring and protecting natural forests, and creating conservation plots in the region.
