The Stockholm Convention and Exhibition Center in Sweden was the setting for the XXVI World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). The Congress is held every five years in different countries around the world and it is one of the most relevant international scientific-academic events in the field of forestry.
This edition was attended by more than 4,000 people in which the Private Institute for Climate Change Research (ICC) presented the South Coast Restoration Network of Guatemala, led by the ICC and the National Forestry Institute (INAB). The network is an alliance by government institutions, non-governmental organizations, private companies, local governments, communities and academia.
During the presentation, the ICC highlighted the importance of linking different society sectors to make restoration actions possible and the main results in terms of restoration of riparian forest and mangrove ecosystems that the Network has achieved since its creation in 2016. In addition, it was remarked the importance of the participation of women in the establishment of forest nurseries to produce trees with high ecological importance.
“We are pleased to invite the ICC to the IUFRO World Congress to share the experience of The South Coast Restoration Network of Guatemala by showcasing success stories related to efforts and activities developed, such as workshops, capacity building and implementation of restoration actions in the field”.
Janice Burns, Deputy Coordinator of IUFRO's Special Program for Capacity Building
In 2023, the ICC became a member of IUFRO with the aim of promoting forest research, knowledge exchange, and the development of science-based solutions for the forests and people worldwide benefits. This global network of cooperation in forest science brings together more than 15,000 scientists from nearly 700 member organizations in over 110 countries.
The ICC is one of only two Guatemalan institutions that are part of this international network, with which it has previously collaborated on various projects. One such example is the GLFx Costa Sur Guatemala chapter, a space within the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) that promotes forest landscape restoration at an international level and where the Network’s restoration actions are precisely disseminated.
