As part of World Soil Day, celebrated every December 5th, the Guatemalan Alliance for Soil Management, with the support of the SoilFER Project of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), organized an event in Guatemala City to highlight the importance of soil in the social and economic sustainability of the country.
The event was attended by representatives from several organizations in the government and private sector, NGOs, international cooperation and academia. The event allowed to share expert presentations, project dissemination, a panel forum to exchange knowledge about this valuable resource, and research presentations by master’s students from the Faculty of Agronomy at USAC.
Update vegetation cover and land use map, advances in soil taxonomic classification, and the presentation of the SoilFER project were some of the topics discussed. Additionally, the state of soil degradation in Guatemala, the situation of soil legislation, and a proposal to update the bill registered as number 4813, named “Law for the Management, Conservation, and Restoration of Agricultural Soils,” were talked about.
One of the events’ conclusions highlighted the planet’s survival dependence on proper soil management. According to the FAO, more than 95% of our food comes from the soil, which also provides essential elements for plants. However, climate change and human activity are degrading soils, affecting food production. A call was made to join efforts for the promotion and approval of the soil conservation law.
The Guatemalan Alliance for Soil Management is a platform created to foster synergies for sustainable soil management. The ICC is one of the founding organizations of this space, which now includes twenty institutions from different sectors of the country.
