ICC Professionals Contribute to an Important Natural History Publication on Guatemala

December 18 , 2025

We are proud to have contributed to the writing of the publication “Natural History of the Kingdom of Guatemala: An Illustrated Reinterpretation,” prepared by the Guatemalan Academy of Geography and History with financial support from Banco Industrial. This work, which took more than five years to complete, is based on the historic manuscript written in 1722 by Fray Francisco Ximénez using a quill pen and iron gall ink on Genoese paper.

With the goal of highlighting, updating, and widely sharing the rich content of this important natural history work, the text was reinterpreted and illustrated in light of modern science. This process has generated valuable insights that can serve as a historical foundation for future scientific research.

PhD. Alex Guerra, Executive Director of ICC, and PhD. Ricardo Marroquín, Coordinator of the Climate and Hydrology Research Program, contributed to the chapter “On the Waters,” complementing and updating, through their scientific expertise, the descriptions of Guatemala’s rivers, lakes, lagoons, and water sources originally documented by Ximénez more than 300 years ago. Additionally, PhD. Guerra is co-author of the chapter “On Mountains and Volcanoes.” The publication will soon be officially presented.
