On May 25th, the Guatemalan Sugar Association (ASAZGUA) presented the 2023 Reforestation Plan, which consists of planting more than 955,000 trees in eleven departments of the country, which means the reforestation of approximately 860 hectares. The ICC will provide technical and scientific support to achieve these goals.
The activity was carried out in Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Escuintla, and was attended by representatives of different sugar producing companies, government institutions, NGOs, and other partners, who participated in the symbolic planting of 500 saplings of different native species.
In addition to providing technical and scientific support, the ICC serves as a link between communities, companies, institutions, and municipalities for the establishment of forest nurseries, saplings production, and the identification of potential reforestation areas. Dr. Alex Guerra, Director General of the ICC, added that besides to the important contribution of the sugar sector, there are other contributions from various communities, municipalities, institutions, and other companies, which is a positive collective effort for the country.
As a result of this collective effort, since 2011 around 7,000 hectares have been reforested, which has contributed to the recovery of riparian forests, water recharge zones and biological corridors. Adding the 860 hectares planned for this year, by the end of 2023 an equivalent of 11,000 soccer fields will have been reforested.
Restoring and conserving forests is a vital component to combat the negative effects of climate change, since growing trees clean the air, remove part of the pollution generated by humans, regulate the water cycle, help protect the soil, are habitat for various species of flora and fauna, among other benefits they provide.
