Workshop with journalists from Escuintla promotes preventive actions against forest fires

March 10, 2026

A second workshop was held with journalists from various local media outlets in Escuintla, aimed at strengthening their knowledge about forest fires and their impact on the region’s volcanic ecosystems. The activity was organized as part of awareness-raising efforts ahead of the dry season, when the risk of forest fires significantly increases in forested areas and water recharge zones.

The workshop was jointly organized by the National Forest Institute (INAB) and ICC. During the session, Marco Tax, Director of Operations at ICC, shared technical information on the relationship between forests, water, and forest fires, highlighting how climate variability intensifies the conditions that favor these events. In addition, Baldomero Jorge Pérez from INAB presented the main prevention measures, as well as the legal and strategic guidelines aimed at reducing the incidence of forest fires in the department.

The workshop created a valuable space for knowledge exchange and for strengthening the role of journalism as a key pillar in disseminating prevention messages. Participating journalists reflected on their role in communicating environmental risks, particularly during the months when forest fires increase. Both INAB and ICC emphasized the importance of informed media coverage that contributes to protecting Escuintla’s natural resources.

Finally, INAB presented its annual Forest Fire Prevention Campaign, designed to promote community action, responsible practices, and greater awareness about the protection of ecosystems. The institutions reiterated the importance of coordinated work among authorities, communicators, and communities to preserve forests and reduce the impact of fires in the region.
