Workshop with journalists promotes forest fire prevention in Suchitepéquez

March 6, 2026

A workshop was held in Mazatenango for journalists from various local media outlets in the department of Suchitepéquez. A total of 20 journalists participated, dedicating the morning to exploring and deepening their understanding of issues related to forest fires, an increasingly relevant topic for the region as the dry season approaches and associated risks intensify.

The activity was organized jointly with the National Forest Institute (INAB). During the session, Alex Guerra, Executive Director of ICC, delivered a presentation on climate change and the growing risk of forest fires in volcanic areas, emphasizing how current climate variability is increasing the vulnerability of ecosystems. Additionally, Luis Gustavo Morales from INAB presented key information on fire prevention, different types of preventive measures, and the legal framework that regulates these actions in Guatemala.

The main objective of the workshop was to strengthen journalists’ capacities, recognizing that they are essential actors in disseminating information and raising public awareness. Through their work, journalists can amplify preventive messages and contribute to reducing the incidence of forest fires in Suchitepéquez, particularly in high-risk areas such as Cerro Pecúl, one of the department’s most vulnerable sites.

The exchange of knowledge also encouraged reflection on the importance of timely and clear communication during the fire season, as well as the role of the media in alerting the public and promoting responsible practices. Both INAB and ICC emphasized that prevention remains the most effective strategy to reduce the loss of forest cover and protect the natural resources that are vital to community well-being.

Finally, it was highlighted that Cerro Pecúl hosts cloud forests of great importance for Suchitepéquez, as a significant portion of the region’s water recharge originates in this area. For this reason, conserving this ecosystem, strengthening awareness efforts, and promoting preventive measures are essential to ensure its protection and the continuity of the environmental services it provides.
